Subject: Survey on School Food During Pandemic Closures - PLEASE DISTRIBUTE
To: cafs <cafs at ryerson.ca>

Hello,

As you will see from the invitation below, Mary McKenna, Amberley Ruetz and
I are seeking to systematically gather information about programs that are
providing food to school children during these COVID-19 times. We are
trying to encourage as many programs as possible across the country to
participate and we will share our data with all who participate. We are
hopeful your organization will see value in having programs complete the
survey (English or French) and ask you to distribute the invitation below,
which contains the links to the survey for participants, widely. If you
have any questions or comments, please let me know.

Thanks very much!

A Survey of Organizations and Agencies Providing Food to School Students
during COVID-19

June 8, 2020

Hello,

Schools in most parts of Canada continue to be closed, however, we are
aware that many are continuing to provide food for school students across
the country. If your organization or agency is providing food to students
that would normally have access to school food programs, this short survey
is for you. Its purpose is to capture information about the food programs
you offer to these children and youth (and, if applicable, their families)
while schools are closed due to COVID-19. The information we collect about
program participation and characteristics will provide a clearer picture of
strategies for food provision and valuable information to inform future
planning.

The survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete. This survey is NOT an
evaluation of any program; it is a compilation of program information. The
person who completes the survey should have a clear understanding of all
key program elements, such as eligibility criteria, program delivery model,
participants, food sourcing, and costs. We are distributing our survey
widely and anticipate that results will reflect the broadest effort
possible to collect this type of information. If you are aware of programs
that are providing food to students at this time, please feel free to send
them this request.

We will be pleased to share your results with you, which we hope will
assist you with your own work. We will prepare a report for practitioners
and policy makers that analyzes results by region, province or territory,
and nationally. As well, as far as we know, ours will be the only data on
this topic analyzed from an academic perspective, with plans to publish the
results in scholarly journals. The results will serve as a permanent
record of what actions were occurring under these unusual circumstances,
which could help inform future preparedness planning as well as a future
national school food program. Thus, we hope your organization will value
and benefit from participating in this research.

This survey was developed by Dr. Rachel-Engler-Stringer of the University
of Saskatchewan and Dr. Mary McKenna of the University of New Brunswick,
with doctoral student Amberley Ruetz, University of Guelph and members of
the School Food Working Group of the Canadian Association of Food
Studies. We are grateful to the organizations and agencies that reviewed
the survey prior to distribution.

The deadline for completing the survey is June 30th. For more information
contact rachel.engler-stringer at usask.ca.

We recognize that your organization or agency is very busy at this
time. Please accept our sincere thank you for your work and for taking the
time to provide us with this valuable information!

Sincerely yours,

Rachel Engler-Stringer Mary McKenna

plus d'informations, veuillez contacter rachel.engler-stringer at usask.ca

d’information svp contactez rachel.engler-stringer at usask.ca.

Rachel Engler-Stringer Mary McKenna

Professeure agrégée, UofS Professeure et
