The Institute for Sustainable Food Systems<http://www.kpu.ca/isfs> (ISFS) is seeking applications for a one-year Research Associate position focused on food system economics. The research associate will collaborate with other ISFS research associates to develop research methodology and analyze data on the economic impacts of local/regional food systems, such as agricultural land protection, household food consumption, farm income etc. Please see the attached form position details and how to apply.




About the Institute for Sustainable Food Systems (ISFS)

ISFS is an applied research and extension unit at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU). We investigate and support regional food systems as key elements of sustainable communities, focusing predominantly on British Columbia but also extending our programming to other regions. Our applied research focuses on the potential of regional food systems in terms of agriculture and food, economics, community health, policy, and environmental integrity. Our extension programming provides information and support for farmers, communities, business, policy makers, and others. Community collaboration is central to our approach.

ISFS is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and extension specialists with expertise in food systems, agriculture, economics, farm business management, ecology, public health policy and planning and other disciplines. Our office is on KPU's Richmond campus, located at 8771 Lansdowne Road, Richmond BC. The campus is served by rapid transit (Canada Line - Lansdowne Station), by which downtown Vancouver can be reached in about 30 minutes.

Position Overview

*         35 hours/week for one year, with opportunity to renew on an ongoing annual basis dependent on performance and funding

*         Salary: $25-$30/hour dependent on qualifications and experience, inclusive of benefits

*         Application Nov. 9th, 2018

*         Position start date: January 2nd, 2019

*         Position end date: December 31st, 2019




Responsibilities and Tasks

The research associate will collaborate with other ISFS research associates working on various projects. The primary responsibilities include:

* Assist ISFS Senior Research Associate in developing research methodology and analyzing data on economic impacts of local/regional food systems

* Conduct analytical studies on other food system issues such as agricultural land protection, household food consumption, farm income and

* Prepare technical reports, manuscripts and presentation materials

* Assist other team member in preparing research grant applications



Qualifications, Skills and Experience

The successful applicant for this position must:

* Hold a master or doctorate degree in economics, agricultural economics, applied economics or related field

* Have a good knowledge and experience in food system economic impact modelling

* Be proficient in the use of statistical packages such as SPSS, SAS, STATA and R.

* Have strong writing skills demonstrated by their lay and/or academic publication record

* Have strong interpersonal communication skills

* Have demonstrated ability to work amicably, productively, collaboratively and with a high degree of autonomy as part of a multi-disciplinary team

* Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or hold a valid work permit



The following will be considered assets:

* Knowledge of the food system landscape of BC, in particular the nascent smaller scale, alternate market and organic sector

* Experience with project development and management

* Demonstrated ability to conceptualize a complex project and effectively plan and execute steps to complete it

* Grant writing experience and/or training
