After more than five years of negotiations, Canada and the European Union
are widely expected to announce on September 25 the completion of the text
of the Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the
beginning of the ratification process.

Heralded as the most ambitious trade agreement ever signed, CETA goes far
beyond facilitating trade to threaten the right of governments in Canada
and Europe to regulate corporate activity in the public interest. CETA will
include broad investor protection clauses and investor-state dispute
settlement (ISDS), regulatory convergence, new rules on intellectual
property and patents, and will include disciplines on government
procurement at all levels of government, labour mobility, agriculture,
financial services, and a whole host of other “technical barriers to
trade”. Already being called the template for the US-EU Transatlantic Trade
and Investment Partnership (TTIP), this corporate rights deal is a threat
to democracy and sovereignty on both sides of the Atlantic.
