Hello all,
firstly, apologies for cross postings.

As many will know, I have been integrating both Indigenous food systems and
fisheries more and more into my work over the past decade or so. There is a
host of great books by Indigenous authors to support our work at
decolonizing ourselves and our food systems: Dawn Morrison, Jeannette
Armstrong, Pam Palmater, Arthur Manual and Taiaiake Alfred all come to mind
and are very much worth seeking out.

I recently came across a great book that stands to do for seafood what Fast
Food Nation did for industrial meat systems. The book is called The Fish
Market: Inside the Big-Money Battle for the Ocean and Your Dinner Plate, by
Lee Van Der Voo. It is very readable, shocking, and important information
if we hope to save our oceans and coastal communities.

Lastly, I recently joined the staff of Ecotrust Canada and am supporting a
meeting that is being held next friday, February 23rd in Vancouver. The
day-long event will feature great speakers, some vital information and
conversations that will help us to elaborate what needs to be changed in
federal fisheries policy in order to support the vibrancy of coastal
communities and ecosystems, and the livelihoods of those who live there.

Fisheries, like Indigenous food systems, have for too long been
marginalized in the food movement. If you are curious about, or already
supportive of sustainable fisheries, please consider joining us next week
at the Croatian Cultural Centre. For more information, please see the
attached invitation.

in good food,
Abra

"Rather than concentrating on what sort of food is healthy for the
individual person, we must think about what kind of production system is
healthy for the globe. Acting in the context of this vision of a different
kind of food system, we will gain the freedom - and the power - to force
change for some measure of justice in this one." Cathleen Kneen, 1987
