Hi everyone,

I had hoped to talk with you about some exciting food work we are doing in
the New Westminster School District at the gathering, but unfortunately I
had to cancel at the last minute for health reasons.

At the request of our School Board, we have embarked on a
comprehensive review of our food programming in the District. We have
pulled together a team that also includes Fraser Health staff (Dietitian Deanna
Tan Francoeur and Healthy Community Specialist Sukhdeep Jassar) to work on
this. As part of the process we are looking at best practices in other
jurisdictions, and requesting feedback from a wide variety of
stakeholders. This work will lead to the development of a food strategy
that could involve the development of a universal food program in our
school district.

We have developed a survey to gather feedback and although it is targeted
towards school districts, I know there are some incredible community
partners out there who work with food in schools. We are particularly
interested in hearing from folks in the lower mainland and those with
experience in universal food programming, but all feedback is valuable.

Here is the link to the survey:

New Westminster Schools Food Review Survey - New Westminster Schools is
developing a strategy to ensure that all students have access to adequate
food and to promote healthy eating. This strategy could involve school
breakfast, lunch and/or snack programs that will be available to all
students. Subsidies will be offered to those families in need. We would
like to understand how other school districts are operating their food
programs to inform our strategy. Survey results will be part of a public
report. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
