Greetings all,

Please see information below regarding the next webinar on “Promoting Equity in Local Food Systems through Cooperative Extension” which will happen on Wednesday September 6th from 12-1 PST; 3-4 EST. We are co-llaborating on this webinar with the Community Local and Regional Food Systems Community of Practice.

This critical work is relevant and beneficial for all of us doing work in the agricultural and food systems-related fields whether rural, urban, sub-urban, coastal or land-locked – because there is no agriculture without culture. We must acknowledge the impact of social systems upon our work – and ways we can navigate these social systems to undo the oppression that continues to this day. The learning, teaching and doing of these systems and processes is incomplete/un-whole without an investigation of race, class, gender, power and privilege and how they continue to manifest and how people in and with extension are able to overcome these tremendous and often fear-inducing obstacles. I encourage you to share this opportunity with your colleagues, students, friends and family members and your neighbors – this is a conversation everyone should be a part of.

Mark your calendars. Hope you can make it! Please see the message from Lucy Diekman below for more details. I will be sending reminders as we get closer to the date.

In solidarity,

Promoting equity in local food systems through Cooperative Extension

When: Wednesday, September 6, 12 - 1 pm Pacific Time/3 - 4 pm Eastern Time

How can we apply equity and anti-racism principles to our food system work? In answer to this question, this webinar provides three examples from the Cooperative Extension System of efforts to promote equity and undo racism in local food systems. These examples from North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania offer a range of experiences and strategies.

Kaitlin Wojciak, from Michigan State University Extension, will describe a recent training and learning group dedicated to exploring issues of power, privilege, and racial equity for the state’s Community Food Systems team. Shorlette Ammons, from North Carolina’s Center for Environmental Farming Systems, will discuss the Center’s efforts to embed an equity lens and practice into all areas of its work. Heather Manzo, from Penn State Extension, will describe work with an urban food policy council to engage diverse community members and positively impact equity issues in the metropolitan food system.

Please join our speakers to discuss how these equity initiatives have evolved, the challenges they have faced, and the supportive factors that contributed to the success of their efforts. This webinar is put on by the working group on Undoing Inequality in the Food System and the Sustainable Agriculture Education Association.

Please <https://zoom.us/webinar/register/aaca61732cf61b6766858a512be5123a> register here and be sure to include any questions you have for our speakers about their work.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

I hope you can join us!

Lucy
