'FOOD-FIRST’ APPROACH TO HEALTHY AGING: NEW RESEARCH EXPLORING FUNCTIONAL
AGRI-FOODS

_Hosted by: _Nutrition Resource Centre [9]

TUESDAY JUNE 11 FROM 12:00 PM

Given the rapid growth of the older adult population and an increasingly
stressed health care system, promoting healthy aging strategies is
paramount. The Agri-food for Healthy Aging [10](A-HA) program (part of the
Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging [11]) is exploring opportunities
to promote the health and well-being of older adults through the innovative
use of food. This 'food-first' approach underpins a number of research
efforts looking at functional agri-foods and their role in promoting
optimal health as we age. Join NRC and A-HA for the first installment of a
"Healthy Aging & Nutrition" webinar series and learn about the latest
research in food for healthy aging, including bagels for diabetes
prevention and a novel spearmint tea for joint health.

southern Ontario, where roughly 98 percent of the province's food is
produced. Join two of the report's authors, Dr. Rod McRae and Dr. Atif
Kubursi, and moderator Kathy Macpherson, Vice President of Research and

DIGITAL DIAGNOSIS OF POPULATION NUTRITION

_Hosted by:_ Nutrition Resource Centre [9]

WEDNESDAY JUNE 18 FROM 12:00 PM

Understanding consumer food choices are important to promoting healthier
diets and preventing obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes and
heart disease. However, currently available methods (ex. diet surveys) to
track population-level eating behaviors are resource intensive and subject
to significant measurement error and bias, and therefore not practical for
routine public health use. In this webinar, you will learn about a novel
approach to tracking consumer food choices - using digital food purchasing
data from grocery stores - and how this information can be used to develop
more targeted strategies to promote healthy eating and monitor the
effectiveness of such efforts.
