Thank you for sharing this attached summary of the effects of mining on
First Nations communities. While I'm sad to say that not much has changed
in regards to the unjust and oppressive colonial land policies and mining
law, the paper does a good job at linking the impacts of mining to
bio-cultural heritage and Indigenous food harvesting strategies (hunting,
fishing and gathering) and points to the need to recognize Aboriginal title
and rights to the traditional territories on which mining is taking place.

I feel it's also important that the summary points out the need for cross
sectoral responses to destructive impacts of mining from ministries
regarding fisheries, rangeland, forestry etc...

I find it interesting that the "The Ministry of Agriculture and Lands’
Crown Lands Restoration Branch, formed only in 2003 oversees the
remediation of abandoned mines. Its limited resources combined with
extensive studies can slow cleanup of sites potentially contaminate First
Nations traditional territories". Note: It was Bill Bennett, Minster of
Energy, Mines who was appointed by Christy Clark to conduct the recent
Agricultural Land Reserve Core review that resulted in rezoning a large
portion of ag land in the province.

Everything about the mining leaves another black mark on the Canada's
relationships and practices of dispossessing Indigenous peoples from
important bio-cultural heritage and harvesting sites in the Indigenous land
and food system.

In this way, this document points to an important key point of intersection
that warrants building coalitions between Indigenous peoples, farmers,
agricultural policy wonks and communities impacted by mining.

As Secwepemc Elder,Mike Arnouse asks "if they assert they own the land,
then what are they doing to take care of it?"
