I can, as a former employer, also add that in my experience women will under-sell themselves and ask for less than male candidates.

Many thanks for sharing this post. As a job candidate I have never known how to respond "correctly" to the salary expectation question without compromising my application or family budget. And this week two young women were asking my advice on how to answer that question.
