Hello members and supporters, 

  
Please support our society in our desire to build an educational urban
greenhouse in the heart of Nanaimo. Our project is representing British
Columbia in an online voting competition and the extra funding would
mean we could build the greenhouses sooner, perhaps even in time for
growing next year! 

The Nanaimo Community Gardens Society has operated a greenhouse in
Nanaimo for almost two decades. This new, centrally located site will
allow it to expand its education programs, offering insights about local
food production to more community members and school groups. The
greenhouse will also produce vegetable, herb and edible flower seedlings
that will be donated to community organizations and schools and sold to
residents.

Co-op Community Spaces Program, launched this past spring, is donating
$1 million this year to fund projects related to recreation,
environmental conservation and urban agriculture across Western Canada.
The Nanaimo Community Gardens Society's greenhouse project is one of 16
being funded in 2015.

Four projects have been selected as finalists to represent their
respective provinces and are vying for an additional $25,000 in funding.
An online vote Sept. 14-25 will determine the winner.

Nanaimo's community greenhouse, representing BC, will be competing with
a town square (Nipawin, Sask.), a community playground (Stony Plain,
Alta.) and a community rain garden (Winnipeg, Man.).
